Jala Hooks from Temple University & Aaron Wong from San Francisco State University

Once again, we are honored and fortunate to choose 2 outstanding students to award this year’s EZstorit Get Ahead Scholarship.

Without further ado, we are proud to announce that Jala Hooks, a senior pursuing a degree in Africology and Political Science at Temple University and Aaron Wong, a graduate student pursuing a Master’s in Business Administration at San Francisco State University are our 2022 EZstorit Get Ahead Scholarship Recipients.

Jala Hooks

Jala Hooks, a proud senior of Africology and Political Science major from Philadelphia, Pa. Jala is no stranger to challenges, however, she perseveres when faced with obstacles. Although Philadelphia is known for “Brotherly Love”, there are around 100,000 children that go without food almost every day. Being aware of this situation in her community, she embarked on a journey to combat this issue with the Umoja Community Fridge project.

Despite challenges from the onset, Jala and her team were determined to see this project come to fruition. Reaching out to numerous local businesses to house a community refrigerator (small shed) at their businesses only to receive many, many “No’s”. Jala and her team forged on. They overcame other obstacles with financing, weather issues and supply delays they Umoja Community Fridge project opened in February 2021. Since its opening over 500 people have been fed.

Jala Hooks remains active in her community and at her university. Jala has been President of Temple University’s Black Law Students Association, community service chair of Temple University’s Black Law Students Association, Vice President of Temple University’s Progressive NAACP and Public Relations Chair of the Organization of Young. Upon graduation, Jala plans to pursue her Juris Doctor.

We are honored to be a small contribution to Jala’s education journey by awarding her one of the 2022 EZstorit Get Ahead Scholarship. Investing in students and their future benefits us all. We wish Jala much success in all her future endeavors.

Aaron Wong

Aaron Wong is a Graduate Student at San Francisco State University pursuing his Master’s in Business Administration. Aaron holds a Bachelors from UCLA in Geography/Environmental Studies. Aaron desire is to create a greener future for his community and for the world itself. However, early in his career, he learned that making a difference requires more than just an idea, but also the tools to enact real change in the world. That is why Aaron returned to school, so he could learn the leadership skills necessary to be the change he wants to see in the world.

Aaron chose San Francisco State University for their vision of creating a more ethical and sustainable future for businesses. As it stands today, business, ethics, and sustainable practices don’t mix very well. Aaron aims to change that misconception; and believes that sustainability and ethics are core business principles and that organizations that follow sustainable and ethical practices are significantly more productive than their traditional counterparts.

Aaron sees things in a different way and is working toward making real change in the world. Aside from his studies, he hopes to one day open his own small business related to his love of cooking. A business that will allow him in some way to give back to his local community.

We are thrilled to help contribute to making the world a better place for us all by playing a small role in Aaron’s education. We wish Aaron continued success in his future endeavors.
