When a $75 Fee Becomes a Nightmare: My Experience with Public Storage 1600 W Sample Rd On January 20, I received a voicemail from Public Storage about an unexpected $75 garbage disposal fee. When I called, I was told a garbage bag (approximately 35 lbs) had been left outside and disposed of, resulting in the charge. I explained that I was grieving my father (RIP 09/23/25) and handling final arrangements, and that post-traumatic symptoms affected my focusa detail that cameras may have interpreted as me walking back to my unit as if I had forgotten something. I offered documentation, which was declined but she acknowledged my situation. My customer history with Public Storage dates back to 2017, including over five years at this location without prior issues of this kind. I offered an apology, and the representative was respectful, confirming that a request would be submitted to refund the disposal fee. I expressed my appreciation for her professionalism. February 2, the fee remained. I contacted support via chat, restated the situation, and expressed concern that the submitted correction had not occurred. The representative again indicated a refund request would be submitted. On February 5, the charge remained on my account, necessitating an in-person visit. Staff confirmed that a refund request had been submitted but noted that the owner might require additional time to process it. My GoFundMescheduled to close on February 7, my birthdaywas acknowledged, and I was gently advised that rent payment was still required to avoid late fees. At that time, the expectation was that the charge would soon be refunded or prorated. I later received a feedback email about the visit, but completing a review before the submitted correction felt premature. As of February 16, there has been no reimbursement. What should have been a simple correction turned into a prolonged back-and-forth. When Loyalty and Grief Meet Corporate Cruelty The $75 charge appears to serve no purpose other than enriching either the employee or the ownerlikely divided among staff, management, and overheadwhile the company simultaneously solicits glowing feedback for the very fee causing distress. This sends a clear message: profit is valued far above resolving legitimate customer concerns. Even a long-standing, responsible customergrieving a recently deceased father, dealing with documented post-traumatic symptoms, and just turning 36can be treated with blatant disregard. This isnt about money; its about principle and ethics. In 17 years with Public Storage, Ive never seen such exploitation. Exploiting the Vulnerable Customers must constantly advocate for themselves, or routine monthly adjustments spiral unchecked. Frequent relocationsevery three or six monthsare necessary just to secure a marginally cheaper unit. The practice is effectively legalized extortion, with virtually no protection for long-term clients. Vulnerable groupsthe elderly, workaholics, and the grievingare prey to this system. I have personally witnessed the extremes to which this operation will go. A Warning to Potential Clients Potential clients deserve to know the true cost of silence. Unless assertive or favored, you are at the companys mercy. I'm fortunate to always carry a bodycam and other documentation, providing evidence if needed. Documentation helps, but the process is exhausting. They can keep the $75; I hope it was worth eroding trust and exploiting vulnerable customers. This serves as a cruel reminder that certain corporations need reform. Injustice at Public Storage I trusted this location for years, yet their treatment of customers shows a complete disregard for long-standing clients facing loss or hardship. Despite my fathers recent passing, full documentation, and an active GoFundMe in his memory, I was treated like a commodity. Given the circumstances, the repeated delays and back-and-forth over a simple fee created a needless cat and mouse process, which was especially inappropriate while I was coping with my fathers passing.
