The Benefits Of Renting A Self Storage Unit

Preview

If you find that you're running out of space in your home, or you simply have too much stuff for the size of the home you have, you might want to consider renting a self storage unit. That way you can keep your things and won't have to get rid of possessions you want to keep, but you can store them off-site where they're not in the way. Storage units can be great ways to do that, so you won't feel pressured to part with items that matter to you. Getting rid of things you like due to space concerns can be sad and stressful.

A storage unit helps you avoid those worries and uncomfortable decisions, and can make it far easier to keep items that belonged to someone you lost, a collection you inherited or developed over time, extra furniture when you move in with someone, items you want for a new home, or anything you're hanging onto while you're deciding whether you want to keep it, sell it, donate it, or have another use for it in the future. Storage units equal convenience. Here are some of the biggest benefits of renting a self storage unit.

1. You Can Store Your Belongings in a Safe and Secure Location

Having the right space to store your things matters. You don't want to put something that's sensitive to temperature and moisture into the shed in your backyard, for example. Even putting items in the garage might not be the best way to handle things if you have items that are delicate or that could easily become damaged. Rather than take that kind of risk with possessions that are important to you, you can use a self storage unit to put everything in one safe, secure place.

Many self storage units are also climate controlled, so you can feel confident that too much hot or cold weather won't damage what you've stored. Moisture won't get to your belongings and cause mold or mildew, and dry air won't dry them out and cause them to become brittle. Depending on what you're storing, there are many ways that renting a self storage unit can protect what you care about and want to keep, but might not be able to safely store in your house.

2. You Can Access Your Belongings Whenever You Need Them

Getting access to your belongings whenever you need them is another big benefit of renting a self storage unit. Some storage facilities are open on a 24-hour basis, while others close down overnight. Either way, though, you can generally access your items when you need or want to. If you work odd hours or have other reasons why you might need to get to your things during the middle of the night, a 24-hour self storage facility can be the right choice for your items.

For most people, having access from early in the morning until early or mid-evening time periods is good enough. They don't need to get into their storage unit overnight. If that's you, there are plenty of options to choose from, since you won't have to look for 24-hour access. Knowing where your belongings are, that they're safe, and that you can get to them easily and efficiently when needed can make renting a self storage unit the right choice.

3. You Can Save Money On Storage Costs

Renting a self storage unit can help you save money on storage costs. That might seem counterintuitive, but self storage is less expensive than many other storage options. If you're using rooms in your home to store things, you can't use those rooms efficiently for other purposes. That's costing you money because you're paying to heat and cool space in your actual home that you don't get to use. You can turn that space into an office for your side hustle, or even rent it out for extra income. Based on this you can say that self storage is good for the economy.

Self storage units are also inexpensive because they don't require you to buy anything and add it to your property to store your things. An alternative, for example, would be for you to add on to your garage, or to purchase a storage shed for your backyard. Doing either one of those things is far more costly than the rental price of a storage shed, even if you need a larger shed with a lot of space in it. You can store your items safely and safe yourself a lot of money, all at the same time.

4. You Can Reduce the Amount of Clutter In Your Home

A lot of homes are more cluttered than they need to be, because there are so many items the homeowner doesn't want to part with. If your home is like that, you're definitely not alone. But you also don't have to live with clutter if you don't want to. By renting a storage unit you'll be able to put a lot of your items into the unit and get them out of your home, but you won't be giving them up or getting rid of them. If you need one of them later, you know where you can find it and return it to your home.

People with smaller homes can also use a storage unit while they save up and prepare to buy a bigger home, as well. You might have a lot of great things that would be perfect if you just had a little more space, but you aren't quite ready to choose a larger home just yet. Putting those items into a storage unit means they aren't cluttering up your small space, but they'll be there and ready for you when you move to a larger home with more room for all the items you want to keep and enjoy.

5. You Can Free Up Space In Your Home for New Belongings

If you like a lot of the things you have, but you just want to free up some room in your home for something new, a storage unit is a great choice. You can change out your decor and even some of your furniture for the seasons, for example, while keeping the things you're not using at the moment in storage. You can also store items that you're planning to sell or gift to someone else later, while you get new things for your home and find a look you're happy with for your space.

There's no reason you have to keep the same decor and style all the time, even if it was something you really liked when you first got it. Tastes and opinions change, and you can select a new look for your home anytime you want to. But if you're not sure what to do with the things you have while you bring in new belongings, you can easily put them in self storage for a while. That way, you're not rushed to make a decision due to the amount of space you have, and can decide on the items later.

The Bottom Line on Storage Units

It's easy to rent a self storage unit for all sorts of phases in life. Whether you're looking to move to a bigger space later, changing up your look, have sentimental items you want to keep, or have another reason to need the space, storage unit are great choices to protect what matters.

Even if you just have items you're not sure what you want to do with, putting them in storage for a little while can make it easier for you to make a good decision. Then you'll be more likely to keep what you really want, and you can make a plan to sell or donate anything you've decided to let go of in the future. The convenience of a self storage unit really can't be beat.
