Staying Fit While Staying Home

Preview

Staying home during the pandemic has been common for a while now, and while there's an end in sight no one's quite sure just when that will be. But you don't have to let the isolation get to you, and there are plenty of ways to accomplish tasks during COVID-19. A lot of times, all it takes is some modification and a bit of creative thinking. With a little ingenuity, you can turn staying home into something more enjoyable and healthy than you might have thought possible. There are even ways a climate controlled storage unit can help.

For example, you can stay fit even when staying home is necessary. If gyms aren't open in your area, or you don't feel safe attending them, there are some great ways to exercise at home, outdoors, and in other locations where you don't have to be within six feet of other people. Exercising is a good mood booster, too, and most people could use a bit of that with the pandemic going on all around them. Maybe a storage unit can factor into your plans. How? Here are some ideas to consider.

Turn Your Unused Space Into a Home Gym

If you have a room in your home you're not using, or if you have an outdoor or partially outdoor space like a porch, deck, or patio you can use, consider turning it into a home exercise space. You don't need big exercise machines or a lot of fancy equipment. Body weight workouts are good choices, as are exercises that only use small amounts of equipment. Light weights, an exercise ball, kettle bells, resistance bands, and more can all provide a quality workout without the need for a lot of extra room.

Some people even work out in their living room, while they watch TV or listen to music. There's no need to hit the gym when you can stay home and still do most of the exercises you'd do in a more professional setting. You may not have the convenience of some of the machines you were used to, the weights available might not be as heavy, but you don't need to let that stop you. Being creative and using the options you have to get the best possible workout are the things you'll want to focus on when trying to stay home and stay fit at the same time.

You Don't Need to Spend a Lot of Money

One of the biggest concerns for some people who want to get fit and healthy at home is how much money they're going to have to spend. But the good news is that you won't need to spend a lot of money at all. The amount you spend will be up to you, and there are ways to get a lot of exercise equipment for less. Even using the items you have around your home (such as water bottles or canned goods) as light weights can work. Bodyweight exercises are great choices, too, and they don't cost anything at all.

If you want to buy exercise equipment, there are also low-cost options for many items. You can choose smaller items that don't cost as much, shop around, and purchase items second-hand. Especially when it comes to rowing machines and treadmills. if you get your hands on brands like  Hydrow or NordicTrack to Sole or Horizon do not miss this opportunity.

Depending on the time of the year, some people might be getting rid of exercise equipment free or at a very low price because they're just not using it like they thought they would. There are many groups in various communities where you can ask around for exercise equipment and there are safe ways to pick up these items or have them delivered, even with social distancing rules in place.

Diet is an Important Aspect, Too

If you want to stay fit while staying at home, there's more than just exercise to consider. You have to watch your diet, as well. But that doesn't mean eating only salad and lean meats, or never having anything enjoyable. There are plenty of ways to eat most or all of the things you like, and still stay fit. One of the easiest ways is by keeping track of the number of calories you're consuming. That way you can have the kinds of foods you like and won't feel like you're missing out, but you can still keep your weight at a healthy level.

Choosing healthy, low-calorie foods most of the time, and mixing those with small amounts of higher-calorie treats on occasion, is a good way to focus on your health. When you couple that with exercise and care of your mental health, you'll likely have an easier time throughout the pandemic for the rest of the time you have to stay at home. Then when you can start getting out again, you'll be fitter and healthier, so you can start doing all the things you love and have missed out on over the last several months.

Think About a Storage Unit

While it might seem like a strange way to focus on fitness, consider renting a climate controlled storage unit. Not only can it be used to store fitness equipment you're not using, but it can also be used as a gym when the gyms in your area are closed. There are rules and regulations prohibiting people from living in their storage units, but that doesn't mean you can't spend time there. Maybe a storage unit will be the perfect option for you to have a gym of your own. It would allow you to get out of the house for a while, at least most days, but would also keep you safe and socially distanced from others.

Keeping a climate controlled storage space as a home gym means not having to be around other people and put yourself at risk, but also gives you the opportunity to get away from your home and do something active and healthy for your future. It's a good way to focus on a goal during the pandemic and see what you can accomplish. Maybe a storage unit is exactly what you need to stay fit, while (mostly) staying home.
