Posted under: Self-Storage

A lot has been written regarding storage facilities and how to choose the right unit to hold your possessions. I think the same could be said about choosing the right facility for you and your specific needs.

It only takes a little bit of work, and you should be able to find the perfect storage facility and therefore the perfect storage unit just for you.

I will give you just 4 important tips that will make your life easy. Just glance at them and apply them when needed. For more inquiring minds (I count myself in this group) I have broken them down further in this post. Hope it helps you with your self-storage unit search.

Tips for Choosing the Right Facility:

Visit the Facility: Inspect the cleanliness and security measures. (More)
Check Reviews: Look at customer feedback for insight into their experiences. (More)
Compare Prices: Ensure you're getting a good deal by comparing rates. (More)
Consider Location: Choose a facility that's conveniently located for easy access. (More)

Feel free to visit their websites or call them for more specific details about pricing, availability, and any special offers they might have!

Here’s a deeper dive into each of those tips to help you choose the right self-storage facility:

1. Visit the Facility

Why It’s Important:

Inspect Cleanliness: A well-maintained facility reflects good management practices. Check if the units, hallways, and common areas are clean and free from pests.
Check Security Measures: Ensure the facility has robust security features such as surveillance cameras, gated access, individual alarms for units, and on-site security personnel.
Assess Accessibility: Evaluate how easy it is to access your storage unit. Look for features like wide driveways, loading docks, and elevators if you’re on a higher floor.
Evaluate Customer Service: Interact with the staff to gauge their professionalism and responsiveness. Friendly and knowledgeable staff can make a big difference in your storage experience.

What to Look For:

Lighting: Adequate lighting both inside and outside the facility for safety and security.
Climate Control: If you’re storing sensitive items, check if climate-controlled units are available and whether they are well-maintained.
Unit Condition: Inspect a few units of different sizes to ensure they are in good condition and free from water damage or pests.

2. Check Reviews

Why It’s Important:

Gain Insight into Customer Experiences: Reviews can provide a clear picture of what to expect in terms of service quality, facility conditions, and overall customer satisfaction.
Identify Potential Issues: Look for recurring complaints such as poor customer service, security concerns, or unexpected price increases.

What to Look For:

Overall Ratings: High ratings generally indicate a positive experience, but also read detailed reviews to understand specific strengths and weaknesses.
Recent Reviews: Check for recent feedback to ensure the facility’s quality hasn’t declined over time.
Review Trends: Pay attention to patterns in reviews. For example, if multiple reviews mention issues with security, that’s a red flag.

3. Compare Prices

Why It’s Important:

Ensure Competitive Rates: Prices can vary widely between facilities. Comparing rates helps you find a good deal and ensures you’re not overpaying for similar services.
Understand What’s Included: Make sure you’re comparing apples to apples. Some facilities might offer lower rates but charge extra for amenities or access.

What to Look For:

Unit Sizes and Rates: Compare the rates for different unit sizes to ensure you’re getting the best value for your needs.
Additional Fees: Check if there are any extra charges for administration, insurance, or late payments.
Promotions and Discounts: Many facilities offer promotions or discounts for new customers, so inquire about any special offers. Additional Considerations:
Accessibility Hours: Confirm the access hours and ensure they align with your needs. Some facilities offer 24/7 access, while others may have limited hours.
Insurance: Check if the facility provides insurance options or if your homeowners/renters insurance covers your stored items.
Contract Terms: Review the rental agreement carefully, paying attention to terms regarding cancellations, renewals, and potential rate increases.

4. Consider Location

Choose a Facility That’s Conveniently Located for Easy Access

Proximity:

Access Needs: Choose a location that’s close to your home or business if you need frequent access. A closer facility will save time and transportation costs.
Traffic and Accessibility: Consider traffic patterns and ease of access. A facility located in a high-traffic area or with difficult access could be inconvenient.

Safety:

Neighborhood: Evaluate the safety of the neighborhood where the facility is located. A secure and well-lit area can add an extra layer of safety for your belongings.

By thoroughly researching and evaluating these aspects, you’ll be better equipped to select a self-storage facility that meets your needs and provides a positive storage experience.  Boxhub has some additional and tips that can help.
