Are you a fan of dealing with your internet provider every 6-12 months when your price promotion expires? Do you enjoy the crazy mind numbing tricks and games that car dealerships play when it comes to purchasing a car? I myself am not a fan of either. I did not expect the same dreadful experience when it comes to purchasing a small storage box for my belongings. May 2024 - Signed agreement for original unit at $99 August 2024 - Attempted rate increase observed when attempting to pay, visited local office and negotiated to pay $61 to keep the unit. December 2024 - Attempted rate increase observed when attempting to pay, visited local office and negotiated move to smaller unit for better rate. New rate agreed to of $40. April 2025 - Rate increased from $40 -> $80, Increase of 100% January 2026 - Rate is scheduled to increase from $80 -> $106, increase of 35%. Visited local office and spoke to Brian about my options. If you do enjoy wild price hikes at random due to factors out of your control as the consumer (paying for the rental of the unit), then Extra Space Storage is the place for you. I'm not a fan of having to take my time to drive to the storage unit and negotiate my way into a new rate when the price increases. On December 23rd 2024 I spent the better part of 3 hours of my time off from work (and young children) moving my items from a larger unit into a smaller unit because "That is the only way we can get your old rate back". I will say this, Autumn that I spoke to that day was a great help in getting this done. Even though I wasted my afternoon moving things out of my unit, she was great to deal with. My heart goes out to her for having to deal with multiple customers in similar situations like mine. Since December 2024, my rate increased by 100% from $40 to $80. I have cut back on other monthly expenses to help cover the increase. I have dreaded going back and going through the three ring circus yet again to get the price down. If you have a family or a job, time is not always available for this kind of adventure. Fast forward to December of 2025, returning to Extra Space and talking with Brian about my recent rate increase from $80 -> $102, I was told that "we can try to submit this request to get you a better price, but there's no guarantee." "You can try to go somewhere else or another storage provider, but they may get bought out. Then what happens to your stuff??" I cannot believe that this is how this place goes about business on a daily basis. Luckily I live less than 5 minutes away from the unit and will be able to quickly move my things out. I bet there are plenty of people that will be out of town or unable to move their things out when the price increase happens. Sure, you can call or drive down to the office and "Try to get a better price" but why is that a game that consumers are expected to play? This is a terrible customer service experience. I'm sure that all Storage providers prey on their customers in a similar fashion. Maybe I'm the only one that does not care about a 50% price increase at random? Before you take a friend or loved one into Extra Space and sign up for AutoPay or a unit, just expect wild price increases every 6-12 months. When it happens, make sure you take the time out of your schedule or family time to "Come on in and negotiate... no guarantees that we can get it approve though!" This is not an AI review or someone spamming the business to give them a bad review. Since I'm a customer, I've attached my proof of payment (and increases) screenshots. I'm just fed up with the business practices that Extra Space employs. If you have read my review to this point and still want to play these games, feel free to give them a shot.
