05-02-2025My family and I were generally happy with Public Storage in Owings Mills, MD, as we signed a contract with them in the winter of 2024 to rent a nicely insulated, well-protected, medium-sized (10x10), indoor unit for a monthly fee of $89. I was able to help my elderly mother with the contract and other formalities, since the storage was for her, and ensure that she was able to store her things in a safe space (since she moved into a much smaller apartment). Suddenly, after three months, she was informed by Public Storage that her monthly fee would increase to $130 per month. I was able to help her cover the extra $41 until this month (May 2025), when she was informed by them that her monthly fee would again increase now to $168! A 100% increase within just over one year! I've reviewed the contract she has with them and despite much online debate about such increases, there is no clause that allows for this, inevitably constituting a breach of contract, which is why we are currently consulting with a lawyer, as my mother has no other place to move her things and we, her children, no longer live in the area to physically help. This puts her in a very tight spot and this, in my opinion, is why companies like Public Storage do this to their customers; because they know storage is generally necessary and that people must pay to hold on to their precious belongings. This is despicable and I therefore do not recommend storing your belongings at their facilities.
