When getting a self-storage unit for the first time, you may not know the process, or there may be many questions that need an answer. Here is a quick tutorial on self-storage and the basics:

What is self-storage?
This type of self-storage is housed in a facility. A self-storage unit comes in a variety of sizes and is an attached container that will store your goods. There are specialized units available based on your needs and usually have 24-hour monitoring. You will be responsible for paying a monthly fee to house your belongings and possibly an insurance fee depending on the rules of the facility. Quite a few facilities are multi-storied units with a variety of sizes on every floor. The units come as a clear space, but may also contain electricity and private thermostats.

What types of self-storage are available?
There are many types of self-storage available to cater to the needs of a variety of individuals. There is individual storage, business storage, auto storage, boat storage, wine storage and others. These units also come in climate-controlled, drive-up, outside, student storage and more.

Who uses self-storage?
Self-storage units are used by a variety of individuals and businesses. Homeowners, apartment dwellers, students, military, retail stores, large and small corporations and more. You may find non-profit corporations and sports teams also using self-storage to house a number of items.

How do you pack a self-storage unit?
There are many ways to pack a self-storage unit, but organization is key. Using labeled boxes or color-coordinated storage containers will help. When putting furniture into a storage unit, placing the heavy furniture towards the back along the walls will also help add space. If you are using the self-storage unit for files, having an outline of what’s in each box will help you find what you need quickly. You may also want to put your things on pallets based on the location of your items.

What documentation is needed?
To rent a self-storage unit, you will need identification and a way for the facility to contact you in case of an emergency. They may ask for other documents, but those are the basics.
