Preview

Is your home becoming overcrowded with things you don’t use? Storage units can help you save space and your belongings! Rental storage spaces offer surveillance, vehicle storage, climate control, and easy access to your belongings. However, storage units can become over cluttered even for those who aren’t pack rats! People who don’t prepare typically dig through their boxes to find what they’re looking for. This can take hours, so preparation is crucial. If you’re accessing your rental storage units regularly, having an access plan is key. Here are tips for how to set up your rental storage units for easy access.

Use One Size Boxes

Although you may be tempted to use various box sizes for your belongings, you’ll be better off using one size. This will make it easier for stacking and accessibility. Small or medium boxes work great. Large boxes may be capable of holding lightweight items, but they’re often a hassle. Large boxes don’t hold up well on the bottom of stacks and are more difficult to remove if you need something.

Identify the Most Important Items

You don’t want the items you use the most often to be hard to reach or lost in the clutter. This makes it essential to decide what items you’re going to need regularly on a year-round basis. Helpful reminders of what you may need:

  • Seasonal clothing
  • Trip supplies
  • Holiday decorations
  • Tools
  • Hobby supplies
  • Office documents

Important items should be placed last to ensure easy access.

Label and Wrap Each Box

Cluttered rental storage units are a pain, but you can easy avoid them! You may know where items are when first packing, but you’ll be surprised how soon you forget. This makes labeling boxes a priority. Each box should be labeled on the top and at least on one side. This way the information doesn’t accidentally get lost while stacking. Important information for labels:

  • Unique box number
  • Room the items came from
  • Box contents

Remember to be as detailed as possible. Place a mark on the most important boxes so you can easily find them in the future. It’s a wise idea to industrial plastic wrap your boxes tightly. Although it may seem like a burden, you’ll be thankful when your items don’t collect bugs or dust!

Create A List

A smart way to ensure your items don’t get lost is to create and keep track of a list. This list will be useful when you’re trying to find a specific item. On the list notate the contents of each box as well as its box number. You can keep the list manually or digitally. A digital list is typically safer because it can be backed up. There are even apps that let you dictate while you pack, so you won't have to be continuously typing.

Organization Is Key

The more organized your unit is, the more it can hold! You should make sure you keep your items off the floor to reduce the risk of snow or leak damage. A wood or plastic pallet will ensure your items are secure. Sturdy shelves against one wall can aid with organization. If you’re stacking, plywood also comes in handy and helps to stabilize layers. Things to keep in mind while stacking:

  • The most important boxes should be stacked last
  • Larger, heavier boxes should be stacked first
  • Don’t pack too high, this will create a hazard

Large items, such as furniture, should be kept towards the back and against the wall. This will create a path in the middle for easy navigation. Also, there’s less of a chance you'll need to reach stored furniture soon. If you need to stack in the middle, make sure that it's the most easily movable boxes. This way you can move them with ease to get to what you want.

Consider Upgrading

If boxes are already in the middle and crowding your storage space, maybe it’s time to upgrade. While you could stack to the gills, this will make access very difficult! A little extra space in rental storage units can go a long way. It'll save you the time and energy, and also provide good shelving space. You shouldn’t pay for space you don’t use. Luckily, there are apps that can give you a good idea of the amount of space that will work best for you.

Have A Map

Make sure that you draw a map, it doesn’t need to be perfect. This will make it easier for you to know where each box is for future reference. Divide your space into four or more sections and make detailed notes of each section's contents. An especially wise idea is to create the map prior to storing items in your rental storage units. Doing so will make the process easier and faster! Make sure to stick to the map, if you make changes be sure to jot them down.

Protect Your Belongings

You should take extra measures to protect your rental storage units and belongings. Although storage spaces are supposed to be safe, you can never be too careful. An all-weather padlock with a short arm that can stop bolt cutters is recommended. The space of rental storage units should also be taken care of so that you don’t have to pay any extra fees. To avoid fines, plastic off the walls and floor to help catch spray and dripping glue.

Be Aware of the Temperature

The safety of many items depends on the temperature. Electronics, vinyl records, and other temperature weary items can easily get damaged if you’re not careful. Taking precautions will make sure your items are safe and never break down for easy access and usability.
